【Event Highlights】Inauguration of Academia Sinica South Campus: Building a World-Class Research Hub in Southern Taiwan

The Academia Sinica South Campus held its formal inauguration ceremony today (2024/10/15). The event was graced by President Lai Ching-te, who delivered the keynote address, alongside former Vice President and Academician Chen Chien-jen, Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che, and other distinguished guests.

President of Academia Sinica James C. Liao reflected on the campus's journey: the decision to settle in Shalun, Tainan, was made in 2012, with the Executive Yuan approving the development plan in 2017. The campus is designed with a pioneering concept—focusing on critical issues and achieving vertical integration from fundamental research to practical applications. By bridging resources with local academic and research sectors, the campus aims to spearhead world-class forward-looking studies.

President Liao highlighted the distinct operational model of the South Campus compared to the Taipei headquarters. While Northern institutes are categorized by academic disciplines, the South Campus emphasizes the integration of research resources and spaces to encourage cross-disciplinary collaboration. Driven by mission-oriented themes, the campus currently focuses on key areas such as Net-Zero technology, Quantum research, Sustainable Agriscience, and Southern Taiwan Humanities and Social Sciences. By co-appointing external experts and launching actionable programs, Academia Sinica is committed to establishing a new, long-term scientific stronghold in Southern Taiwan.
